The Castelli di Cannero Are Opening to the Public
The legendary island ruins of Lake Maggiore are opening soon — find out how to visit and what makes them so unforgettable.
A Mystery in the Middle of the Lake: The Castelli di Cannero Are Opening to the Public
They are mysterious, half-ruined, and sit quietly in the middle of Lago Maggiore — the Castelli di Cannero. Two small islands, one big history — and this summer, it’s finally happening: the ruins will officially open as a multimedia museum. A restoration project that has taken decades is now coming to a close, and soon visitors will be able to follow the traces of noble families, pirates, and ancient stone walls.

What Are the Castelli di Cannero?
The Castelli di Cannero are two small islands located near Cannero Riviera and Cannobio, just a short distance from the Swiss border. Their story dates back to the 13th century. First used as a stronghold by the Mazzardi family, they were later destroyed by Milanese troops and eventually taken over by the noble Borromeo family. Today, the islands still belong to this same family, which also owns the well-known Isola Bella and Isola Madre.

After extensive renovations, the castle ruins are being transformed into a regional cultural highlight — equipped with modern technology, interactive installations, and a smartphone-based audio guide.
When Will the Castles Open?
The official opening date for the public is Saturday, 28 June 2025. A ceremonial ribbon-cutting will take place on Thursday, 12 June, attended by regional officials and representatives from the Piedmont and Lombardy regions as well as many municipalities around Lago Maggiore.

The recent removal of the iconic construction crane, which had towered over the site for years, symbolises the final phase of the restoration. Tickets will cost 25 euros per adult, including boat transport and the full museum audio guide.
How to Reach the Castelli di Cannero?
A common question: How do you get to the Castelli di Cannero from the eastern shore of Lago Maggiore — for example, from Maccagno or Luino?
Good news: if you’re staying in Maccagno, there are two easy ways to reach Luino, the key transport hub to the castles:
- By ferry: The ferry terminal in Maccagno is only 200 metres from Lagocamp and brings you straight to Luino.
- By car: A quick 15-minute drive will also take you to Luino.
Why Luino? Because it’s the only official hub on the Lombardian side of the lake from which special boats will connect directly to the Castles. A new docking platform is currently under construction between the Verbania building and AVAV in Luino.
